Pharmacy Policies and Procedures
We are asked many questions about veterinary drugs these days. The first and most frequent is "Why can I get that drug cheaper on-line and Why shouldn't I?". This is a great questions. The first part of my answer is surprising. We are the same price for chronic medications as the major on-line retailers. Does this mean you can't find it cheaper, NO. You will always find some place that has that drug for less. The second part of my answer is about why you should know why they are cheaper. These on-line pharmacies have licensed pharmacists and have the same drug that we carry. The difference is what they do. Medications are used for certain conditions. That pharmacist does not know your animals history or sickness, they only know that drug. They do not know what other drugs your pet is on, when the last time they had blood work done and how this medication is effecting your pet. So they mearly offer the product. We maintain your pets history for 3 years no matter what your pet does or where it goes. So we can see what the drug is, if it is still appropriate for the condition your pet is in and can consult you on the medication and your animal, not just on the medication. If there is a need to change we will advise you on why and how. The major issue with ordering your drugs is if something goes wrong we do not know if it was the formulation, dosage, frequency, or interaction and if you call with questions we will tell you that your pet needs to be seen.
Why do I have to come in for a prescription and you will not authorize it over the phone or fax? Internet pharmacies number in the thousands. We can not determin if they are real or not. One big reason is fraud. It may sound unlikely but people change doses, quantities, frequencies, and refills. So when we write you a prescription, we keep a copy and you are now the legal owner of that drug. If it is altered, filled incorrectly, or changed we are not responsible. It is fully your risk and not ours. We back every product we sell. If you decide to purchase other ways it is your choice and your responsibility.
Why don't you have an on-line pharmacy? We don't because we have people to answer the phones during working hours to make sure that there is no issue with the medications you need. Thus, we can change or modify in one conversation what the needs of your pet are. we offer Free shipping on all drugs over $40 so if you need them mailed we will be ahppy to.
why can't I keep refilling? Your animal, just like you, changes on medication. We require all chronic medications to be monitored at least every 6 months with blood work and a physical, if not more frequently. That is the only way we can make sure they are not harming your pet. One example is thyroid medication in dogs. Many people say that we just want to refill, humans do! Humans will but just like us they will do it for a certain period of time. We want to make sure that the weight isn't changing or the health is not a question so that we need to adjust the dosage.
